GP welcomes sperm donor ruling

A GP whose daughter was conceived with donor sperm has welcomed a Government ruling that such children will have the right to know the identity of their genetic parents when they turn 18.

Cardiff GP Dr Siaron West, who has also donated eggs, has been open with her daughter Catrin. 'Being a doctor I realised it was a secret I could not keep forever. I might have been tempted if I could have taken it to my grave,' she said.

She and her husband had made several attempts at IVF. She added: 'GPs are ideally positioned to say "Can you cope with a 10th cycle of IVF? Have you considered donor insemination?" The baby is still genetically half yours.'
