GP wins his 23-year fight for bypass

Dr Gavin Young's 23-year campaign for a bypass around the Cumbrian village where he lives and works finally came to fruition last week as he cut the first sod for the project.

His campaign for a Temple Sowerby bypass was stepped up after his son James was knocked down in 1993, leaving him intellectually impaired.

Dr Young, who once helped block traffic on the busy trunk route, said: 'We've had a whole series of false dawns and now it's beyond relief.

'Temple Sowerby was called the Queen of Westmoreland, but it's hard to be the queen of anywhere when you can't hear the birds singing for the traffic noise.'
