GPC fails to find proof of flu pay

GP negotiators have failed to turn up any evidence to prove the NHS Confederation agreed to pay GPs in England for immunising at-risk under-65s against flu this winter.

The failure means negotiators face their crunch meeting with health minister John Hutton with only their collective recollection to back their claim.

Confederation lead negotiator Mike Farrar insists minutes of the crucial May 1 meeting make no reference to any deal.

But GP negotiator Dr Peter Holden said the style of the meeting where amendments were made to documents prepared on a laptop meant minutes were meaningless.

He added: 'People are being economical with the actuality. I think Mike Farrar was not there for the whole meeting but was called away.'

He said health department officials from Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland had all understood that a UK-wide deal had been struck and

English Department of Health officials were either 'lying or stupid' to have failed to understand that.

Mr Hutton will be called in to resolve the deadlock on his imminent return from holiday.
