GPs call for OOH action

Underfunding of out-of-hours services will harm patient care and increase demand on daytime surgeries, GPs argued.

LMC representatives passed motions calling on the Government to invest more money in out-of-hours care to enable PCOs to set up an efficient service which involved GPs.

Dr Tracey Vell, from Manchester LMC, said PCOs were resorting to using pharmacists and nurse practitioners to replace rather than complement a GP-led service. 'Skill mix should be brought in for clinical, not financial, reasons,' she said. 'When it replaces it, it's hazardous.'

GPC negotiator Dr Ham-ish Meldrum said the PCOs' difficulties showed how GPs had propped up the service.
