GPs criticise PCTs over referrals

Less than a quarter of GPs sitting on primary care trusts believe the new organisations are managing demand for referrals effectively, research by the NHS Alliance has found.

Only one in 10 GPs at the 81 trusts surveyed said control of demand for diagnostics was being achieved.

Trusts also reported their independence was being undermined by targets focused on secondary care and interventions by some strategic health authorities in favour of hospitals.

NHS Alliance chair Dr Mike Dixon said trusts needed to collaborate to exert pressure on hospitals over services.
