GPs defying visits guidance as quality confusion reigns

Dr Phil Fielding says a drugs clampdown by his local police force is likely to put GPs and practice staff at greater risk from violent drug misusers. His practice in Cheltenham has hired a security guard and installed panic buttons to cope with abusive patients.

'When there is a clear-up in our area there is a noticeable rise in addicts coming to the surgery as they are experiencing an enforced detox, and these patients are particularly prone to outbursts,' Dr Fielding said. The practice ensures known drug misusers are not given late appointments so there is plenty of staff around, and that the patient is not left waiting around too long.
