GP's delight at contract plans for childcare

Dr Helena McKeown is delighted GPs are to get the same access to NHS childcare as hospital doctors.

LMC leaders heard last week that the contract would ensure GPs were no longer barred from placing their children in NHS creches.

Dr McKeown, a GP in Salisbury, Wiltshire, and a mother of three, has struggled to find suitable childcare. Her seven-month-old daughter has been on the waiting list of her hospital creche since June. She has only managed to stay on the list because her mother does family planning work for the trust.

Dr McKeown, an executive member of Wiltshire LMC, said the change was a huge breakthrough. 'This means I will not get thrown off the list. I think it's a really good thing we are going to have the same rights as hospital and trust staff.'
