GPs' despair over contract attacks

GPs are growing increasingly

resistant towards Government initiatives because of its attacks on the contract, the GPC chair believes.

Dr Hamish Meldrum said GPs were becoming disillusion-ed by 'backtracking' on the

contract, including threats to pensions, appraisals, locum fund- ing and the MPIG.

Dr Meldrum said: 'At meetings I go to around the

country, there is increasing resistance and almost despair among GPs about the way

they feel they are being

treated.'

Dr Meldrum said ministers faced a huge task in convincing doctors that their strategy of developing a market in health care, with the aim of stimulating improvement and innovation and driving down costs, was working.

'I think there's still a huge job to be done to convince an awful lot of doctors that the present state in which they are being asked to work is the right one.'
