GPs 'held to ransom' by parking fees

Dr Cornel Fleming has accused his local council of holding GPs to ransom by charging them exorbitant fees for an extra parking permit.

Islington borough council in north London has agreed practices can have a second permit, but only if they pay out £1,500.

Dr Fleming, a GP in the area and executive member of Camden and Islington LMC, said the charge was a 'disgusting rip-off' as practices pay only £120 for their first permit.

'The council seems to have a bee in its bonnet about getting everybody walking,' he said. 'There's no way one car is enough for a large practice with up to 30,000 patients.'
