GP's move slashes waiting times

Dr Fayez Ayache's decision to become a GP with a special interest in ENT two years ago has resulted in referral rates for ENT in his area being cut by 34 per cent and waiting times being slashed.

Dr Ayache, the GPwSI in ENT for the eastern area of Ipswich, Suffolk, runs three ENT clinics a week with 85 per cent of patients discharged after their first consultation with him.

Less than 5 per cent of patients are referred to ENT consultants and at one small cottage hospital waiting times have dropped from 28 weeks to zero.

Dr Ayache said: 'The most valuable thing for a GPwSI is the support from secondary care and from local GPs. Feedback from GPs and hospital is absolutely supportive.'
