GPs in the UK will be able to assess the fitness of pilots applying for the new pan-European light aircraft pilot's license.
From this week, the country's 40,000 private pilots have been able to apply for the new license, which will only be valid if they hold a medical certificate.
Usually only GPs with specialist training in aviation medicine have been able to issue medical certificates for pilot licences. But for this specific licence, all GPs will be able to assess the fitness of pilot, according to the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).
If applicants have a significant medical history or condition which has not been reviewed previously, GPs can refer applications to a specialist Aeromedical Examiner.
Guidance for GPs is being provided on the CAA website where a referral form is also available.
