GPs to offer air-conditioning and anger management

GPs are to be expected to commission an eclectic range of new services including air-

conditioning for patients with lung disease and anger management for unruly children.

The Government has set aside £8.9m for commissioners to spend on 'creative' solutions to health inequalities.

Health minister Andy Burnham told a press conference this week: 'With practice-based commissioning we want people to question how they are spending resources. The GP more than anybody is really well placed to decide what is people-centred commissioning.'

But Dr Hamish Meldrum, GPC chair, said: 'It beggars

belief that a Government that has lost its way with the NHS wants the service to do this.'
