Health spending tops £67bn

Government spending on health care rose 8 per cent in 2002 to more than £67 billion.

But the £5.1 billion rise was slightly down on the 10.9 per cent, £6.1 billion increase in health spending in 2001, according to figures from the Office for National Statistics.

Health Secretary John Reid said the figures were proof of the Government's pledge to make record investment in the health service.
