At the heart of general practice since 1960

Here's hoping federations will be fairer

As a salaried doctor, I write with interest and anxiety regarding the proposed new model for general practice.

I hope that as well as 'career opportunities' this is going to bring fairer pay for salaried GPs who at present are being exploited.

I work as hard as the partners in my current practice and earn approximately 50% of what they do.

I have been a full-time salaried GP for nine years and have been looking for a partnership for three years now, but there are simply hardly any available.

I would like to think that this is not a reflection on my personal capability as a doctor, having attained MRCGP, DFSRH and DRCOG and been invited to apply for fellowship of the RCGP.

But the leaders of the BMA and college are mostly GP partners and I am concerned there is not enough salaried GP representation.

Hopefully we are going to see a truly fairer system and not just a rebranding exercise with ongoing exploitation.
