Hib campaign takes a pounding

Dr Bhupendra Patel has condemned the Government's haemophilus influenzae type b vaccine booster campaign as underfunded, bureaucratic and unfair because of unequal distribution of the £1 administration fee.

The campaign was launched earlier this year after figures showed a four-fold increase in the disease in under-fives. But Dr Patel, a GP in Merthyr Tydfil and member of Bro Taf LMC, said GPs in his area were confused at the different allocation of the £1 administration fee across its four local health boards.

Merthyr LHB decided on a 30/70 split between GP practices and the trust but Cardiff, Vale of Glamorgan and Rhondda Cynon Taff boards gave GPs half the money after a workload audit.

Dr Patel said the process had been too long-winded and bureaucratic and there was no reason for some GPs getting more than others.
