A single-handed GP in Hull has won Pulse’s GP of the Year award for providing ‘innovative’ care to the largest council estate in Europe.
Dr Gabriel Hendow of Bransholme Health Centre was awarded this honour at the General Practice Awards on Friday (30 November) in central London.
He was recognised for his methods of care, which include running exercise classes, food clinics and teenage health check clinics in a deprived area of Hull.
The doctor’s surgery was also the only single-handed practice in Britain to be rated ‘overall outstanding’ by the CQC in 2016, and has been called a family-run practice with ‘strong values’ by Dr Hendow’s colleagues.
The GP was also recognised by the Sunday Times Magazine in May 2018 as part of the publication’s Alternative Rich List, which called him a ‘hero in his community’.
Dr Gopal Mehta, a GP at Richmond Road Medical Centre in Hackney, London was highly commended by the award panel for his positive impact on patient care, boosting morale of colleagues, and his work to improve access to and the quality of local healthcare.
An award was also given for GP Trainee of the Year, which went to Dr Franziska Levin in Hertfordshire, who was described as ‘extraordinary’ by her colleagues.
Dr Levin was praised for her personal approach to her role as practice lead for learning disability assessments, which has had 100% uptake on invitations since she became lead.
