Two candidates confirmed in running for top GP negotiating post

Two candidates, both of whom are already on the executive team of the BMA GP Committee, have confirmed they are running to become chair.

The post is the most senior GP job in the BMA, taking the lead on annual contract negotiations and other professional dealings with the Government.

The two confirmed candidates are Dr Richard Vautrey, long-standing deputy chair and currently acting chair of the GPC, and Dr Mark Sanford-Wood, who became a part of the executive team last year.

The pair will be vying to replace Dr Chaand Nagpaul, who left the chair role when appointed chair of BMA Council last month.

Dr Vautrey, a GP in Leeds, was described in nominations to Pulse’s 2013 Power 50 as ‘the smartest hard working GP politician who puts everyone else in the shade’.

Meanwhile, former LMC medical secretary Dr Sanford-Wood was named ‘Devon’s defender’ in 2015. The GP, who is currently a locum, has been a GPC representative since 2011.
