PBC postcard - Dr Shane Gordon

Dr Shane Gordon, chief executive of Colchester PBC Group, on how his local acute trust thinks PCT is Satan incarnate.

Dr Shane Gordon, chief executive of Colchester PBC Group, on how his local acute trust thinks PCT is Satan incarnate.

• I became CEO of our PBC consortium because I like a challenge – and this is a challenge!

• If I wasn't CEO I would have much more time to moan about the state of the NHS.

• I spend 24 to 32 hours a week on PBC business; I am paid for 16 of them.

• We chose our consortium's name, Colchester PBC Group, because it does what is says on the tin.

• Tolerant is the word that best sums up local GPs' attitude to PBC.

• Our PCT's attitude towards PBC is schizophrenic.

• Our local acute trust thinks PBC is Satan incarnate!

• Our greatest achievement as a consortium is keeping our GPs engaged despite slow progress.

• My greatest achievement as consortium CEO is securing the resources to appoint our own staff; my biggest regret has been having to go through the PCT reorganisation.

• The most frustrating thing about PBC is the lack of clarity about the ‘vision' for PBC.

• The biggest threat to PBC's success is the slowness of PCTs to devolve responsibility and control.

• I am optimistic that PBC will lead to world peace – and better services for patients.

• PBC would be transformed overnight if we were given direct control of budgets.

• The worst piece of PBC jargon I have come across is six-letter acronyms, such as OHOCOS (Our Health, Our Care, Our Say).

• Compared with fundholding, PBC is infinitely more bureaucratic.

• I think health ministers view PBC as a means to balance rising demand and costs.

• In five years' time PBC will rule the world (strokes cat and laughs maniacally…).

• In five years' time I will still be taking my Prozac/lithium/zopiclone spritzers before breakfast.
