Derry-based GP Dr Tom Black has been elected to chair the BMA in Northern Ireland, replacing Dr John D Woods.
Dr Black stepped down as the chair of BMA Northern Ireland’s GP Commitee last month, after a seven-year tenure.
During that time, he began the process of GPs handing in undated resignations after the profession voted to walk away from the NHS.
But he recently said GPs in Northern Ireland could roll back on plans to resign following a raft of measures designed to ease pressure on the profession.
He described an investment package this year of £22m as the most significant investment in primary care since the 2004 contract.
This included an £8.8m contractual funding boost, as well as funding for practice-based pharmacists and other clinical support staff to free up GP time.
Dr Alan Stout has replaced Dr Black in the GPC chair role.
