Through his academic career Professor Azeem Majeed has been present on both national and international scenes where he has continuously influenced organisations such as the NHS and the World Health Organization.
Last year, he completed a research project showing that the quality of care people receive from general practice is more important when determining patient satisfaction than GP opening hours – and this year, NHS England has said it is revisiting its policy on extended hours.
This year, was the principal investigator on a successful application for a large research programme, due to start this year, which aims to improve health outcomes in North West London.
Not only does he support his medical students to unlock their full potential and push their boundaries at Imperial College London where he works, he also finds the time to care for his patients in his South London practice.
His longstanding experience got him to take part in the NHS national review of primary care access and the Lancet Commission on the future of the health service.
He is currently working on a number of studies looking at which factors can lead to improved health outcomes for people diagnosed with diabetes, one of the many research areas he is interested in.
Professor Majeed says his favourite moment of the past year was when his students won an RCGP award for improving access to healthcare among homeless people and an award from the Royal Society of Medicine for supporting the development of youth champions in general practice.
