Independents' Day

Hours affair shows us GPs are as spineless as our leaders

I always thought the GPC were a spineless lot who couldn't stand up to the Government and Department of Health.

I now have to take it all back. It is their constituency - that is my colleagues, GPs in general - that are the spineless losers.

After all the muttering about extended hours , it now transpires that across the country, GPs have been rolling over and signing up to deals to work overtime for nothing. Apparently, most PCTs are already exceeding their 50% targets.

If we wanted to exert a bit of pressure to secure a better deal, we would have needed to hold back to see whether the ante would be upped, but that hope has been thrown away by precipitate acceptance of unacceptable offers and wholesale giving in to Government bullying.

I guess my retirement has just moved a few years nearer.
