How can they criticise GMC?

I was astonished and incensed to read details of the leaked letter from the Shipman Inquiry (News, March 1).

It is unclear to me what authority this body has to criticise the GMC, and therefore the medical profession.

Over the past 10-20 years the profession has suffered a plethora of attacks and criticism, often unjustified, and often due to interference from extraneous external influences. I had always understood the GMC was an independent body, a charity, answerable only – through the Privy Council – to the Queen.

I believe the GMC has made superhuman efforts to repair the damage done by Shipman. Enough is enough.
