Ignorance threat to HPV testing plan

Awareness of HPV infection is so low it could jeopardise the proposed introduction of HPV testing as part of cervical screening, research from Cancer Research UK suggests.

In a study of 2,000 people, only 1 per cent of the population knew HPV was a risk factor for cervical cancer and just 14 per cent were aware of the role of sexual transmission.

The researchers said any move to introduce HPV testing alongside smear tests would have to be introduced alongside a national public health campaign.
