GPs are set to have their personal earnings published as part of a public sector transparency drive imposed by the new coalition Government.
The pay of more than 170 top civil servants has been published today and will be followed by the publication of the salaries of any civil servant earning over £58,000.
Publication of the remuneration of tens of thousands of GPs, headmasters and senior police officers is expected to follow next year.
Currently the NHS Information Centre publishes detailed aggregated figures and averages of GP and practice income - but the new plans would see indivudal, named GPs' earnings put in the public domain for the first time.
Francis Maude, minister for the Cabinet Office, said today's announcement puts transparency ‘at the heart of the Government's programme'.
‘Transparency is key to our efficiency drive, and will enable the public to help us to deliver better value for money in public spending.'
‘Today is just the start of what we plan to do. We are determined to set an example for the wider public sector, and to create a ‘right to data' as a core part of government business,' he said.
