Innovative GP scheme to check patient compliance

Dr Jonathan Edwards is backing an innovative scheme to identify patients whose failure to understand their medication is putting them at risk. Dr Edwards, a prescribing lead at Kingston PCT and a GP in Surbiton, Surrey, said elderly patients were asked to bring all their medication to an open day at a day centre where pharmacists assessed their understanding and pinpointed any problems.

One open day involving 23 patients identified two whose compliance problems put them at 'significant risk'. Their GPs were advised to change their treatment.

Dr Edwards said at-risk patients still 'slipped through the net'.
