Insurer fighting fund is closed

The Small Practices Association has closed its campaign fund for GPs fighting for compensation from insurance company St Paul.

The campaign was set up in 2001 to help 100 members left without run-off or medical indemnity cover after the insurer pulled out of the medical market. The association said it had helped to secure compensation for some of the GPs

affected.

Association chair Dr Michael Taylor said the Financial Ombudsman Service considered each GP's case individually, and ordered the St Paul to pay compensation or for run-off cover in some cases.

The association donated £1,262 in unused money from the £5,000 fund to the Royal Medical Benevolent Fund.

Over-65s get pneumococcal jab

The Scottish Executive is to introduce pneumococcal vaccination for all the country's over-65s from this year. Unlike the flu jab, pneumococcal vaccine protects patients for 10 years.
