It is time to target women for PECs

Each week we take a GP's-eye view of an area of the UK

Where? Lancashire. Just off the M6 north of Preston near Morecambe Bay.

And? ‘Lancaster is dominated by its medieval castle and the River Lune that runs through the city. The narrow, Georgian streets surrounding the castle contain a wealth of attractions, shops and restaurants.'

Work? Lancaster is covered by the Morecambe Bay PCT – the largest primary care trust in the country. Covering some 900 square miles and 300,000 people. Lancaster itself boasts only two practices – the Queen Square Medical Practice, with a total of 12 GPs, and the Meadowside Practice with six GPs.

Homes? £265,000 for a detached three-bedroom house with ‘stunning' gardens. In a nearby village with easy access to the M6 and Lancaster city centre.

Schools? Best A-level results at the selective Lancaster Royal and Girls grammar schools.

Leisure? The city itself is compact and attractive. Morecambe is nearby with its traditional seaside charm and spectacular views across the bay to the Lake District. The Lune Valley meanders north through the countryside from Lancaster in one of the most beautiful stretches of river scenery in the UK.

Famous residents: writer and comedienne Victoria Wood;

TV game show host Jim Bullseye Bowen.

Anything else? The Queen is the current ‘Duke of Lancaster' and owns the castle.
