Dr Girish Patel reviews Clare Mullins and Graham Constable's book

In today's NHS, patients expect and deserve the highest quality health care. This book will help primary care teams in general practice, dentistry and ophthalmic settings to deliver that.

The primary care health team now consists of GPs, practice nurses, healthcare assistants, counsellors, health visitors and district nurses as well as all the reception staff and practice manager. Without effective leadership, the primary care team cannot deliver effective care. The first part of this book describes in detail what it is to be an effective leader in the NHS, describing a range of leadership models, styles and techniques. Anyone within primary care can use this information to develop and improve their own leadership skills.

With such a proliferation of individuals and teams within primary care there is also great potential for conflict. The second half of the book deals with all aspects of teambuilding necessary to establish a team capable of maximum performance. Case studies are used to illustrate how to deal with dysfunctional teams, difficult behaviour by staff and patients and how to manage change in the primary care setting.

This excellent book is extremely well referenced, and puts those references in a concise and practical context. The two authors are well qualified as a team to teach both leadership and teambuilding in the modern NHS.

Healthcare researchers have found that teams with greater cohesiveness can produce better clinical outcomes and higher patient satisfaction. If you read this book thoroughly and perform all the practical exercises it suggests, then there you're sure to become a much better leader in the workplace. You will need to reflect on that knowledge and apply it to your primary care team.

Our patients deserve the best possible care from their GP practices and this book will help you deliver that.
