Leading pharmacy offers Viagra online - safe or dangerous?

A leading high-street pharmacy chain is giving men the chance to order erectile dysfunction drugs, Viagra, Cialis and Levitra, online without having to visit their GP first.

Men who are 'too shy' to visit their GP about their erectile dysfuntion will instead be able to complete an online questionnaire at the Lloyds Pharmacy site to get a 'free consultation' with a doctor, The Times reports.

If the unnamed doctors (the site - run by DrThom - says the service is overseen by a Medical Advisory Board and overall clinical responsibility sits with Dr Thomas Van Every and Dr Nneka Nwokolo from London's Victoria Clinic for Sexual Health and HIV, but does not name who carries out the assessments) think you'll benefit from a trial course of Viagra, Cialis or Levitra, they will prescribe four tablets at a cost of £45.

If the trial is successful, you can order up to 16 tablets. If it's not, you can try one or both of the other two.

RCGP chair Dr Steve Field is quoted in The Times as describing the service as 'abhorrent'.

'It could mean that patients who are vulnerable are prescribed medications inappropriately and which could interact with other drugs they are taking or produce unwanted side-effects,' he says.

What do you think? Is this a dangerous service or does it, as the Lloyds website states, make it as convenient as possible for men - most of who do not seek treatment for the condition - to obtain the treatment they need.

A survey of 934 men conducted by the pharmacy, after all, found that four in ten would rather suffer in silence than tell their GP about their ED.
