Let's practise in...Hastings

Where? East Sussex. It can be reached by the A21, which is linked to the M25. Close to Brighton and other southern seaside towns.

And? 'If you like National Trust and English Heritage monuments, castles and manors, woodlands and gardens, pretty villages and unspoilt historic towns, then Hastings welcomes you.'

Work? There are seven GP practices in Hastings serving 38,000 households. Roebuck House surgery dominates the area with its five-branch practice.

Homes? Housing prices are

well below the average. A typical family home costs £167,317.

Schools? Average school exam results for the area match the national standard and there appears to be little variation throughout the schools in the area. Best performers for 2005 were Battle Abbey (independent) and Claverham Community College (state).

Famous residents? Sir Cliff Richard, Catherine Cookson and Alexander Graham Bell, inventor of the telephone.

Anything else? Hastings is home to the International Chess Congress.
