Letter of the week - Nurse pay claims just anti-GP spin

I take great exception to the accusation that GPs are undervaluing their nurses.

Obviously I can't vouch for all practices, but ours has increased nursing hours to take in the quality framework and paid bonuses on top of annual increments, in line with the increased profits it has brought, and to recognise their hard work.

I am aware of allegations in mainstream national papers – mainly The Independent, subject to official complaints via the Press Complaints Commission – and would like to know on what evidence Jenny Aston, chair of the Nurse Practitioners' Association, and the Government base their allegations (News, 28 November).

It is very possible that some practices have not been fair to their nurses, in which case they run the risk of losing valuable assets, but I assume they represent a minority.

In the meantime, the Government seems to seize every opportunity to discredit GPs in an attempt to justify reneging on our contract, which they are obviously now regretting.
