At the heart of general practice since 1960

LIFT should make our hearts sink

From Dr Minesh Patel,

East Grinstead, West Sussex

It always makes me smile

when I read letters such as those from Chris Whitehouse from the LIFT LOBI (15 March), who is clearly working day

and night to put patients at

the heart of the health

agenda.

It is only because of the shortsighted 'strategies' of the Department of Health and PCTs that we have seen rent reimbursement schemes

dry up.

Add that to risk aversion

and a lack of financial understanding among GPs

and we can see why all that is left is LIFT, a 'here and now'

capital system where private equity backers can make practically the best guaranteed return in any financial

market.

Pity the GPs who fail to understand that if someone else can make a profit, so can they.

Pity, also, the future generations of taxpayers who will pay through the nose to the LIFT LOBI to put private equity profit at the heart of the health agenda.
