LMCs conference: Speech by Professor Steve Field, RCGP chair

Professor Steve Field opened the debate on the Darzi review, provoking gales of laughter from the audience when he revealed the health minister told him at a meeting that morning how he was sorry to have missed the debate and looked forward to hearing how the vote went.

LMC representatives, predictably, backed every motion criticising him and his department's policies.

However, Professor Field revealed he was optimistic about the contents of the upcoming Darzi Next Stage Review of the NHS, predicting it would enable GPs to lead change in the health service.

In a measured speech, Professor Field said GPs had to deal head on with the variations in health outcomes and quality of services in general practice, but condemned PCTs and strategic health authories for shoddy implementation of Government policy and failing to consult with GPs.
