Dr Sue Davies is looking at developing a specialism in musculoskeletal medicine and considering managerial jobs in a bid to ensure her income does not drop.

Dr Davies, a GP in Chard, Somerset, said the new reality of more overt competition between providers and fixed global sums meant GPs had to think proactively about boosting income.

She said: 'It's about having marketable skills, looking at what else you can do and seeing how you can develop different opportunities to make up the shortfall.

'There are not the same certainties about what practice income is going to be.'
