Loop diuretic use may hasten bone loss

Prolonged use of loop diuretics may hasten bone loss in men, US research suggests.

Almost 3,200 men took part in a long-term prospective study of fracture risk. Those who were continuous users of loop diuretics had an annual rate of decline of bone mineral density at the hip of 0.78%, compared with 0.33% for non users.

Intermittent use was associated with had an intermediate 0.58% annual rate of decline.
