It's fundamental that both practices consider how a proposed merger impacts on their existing contracts - and get appropriate advice. Very early in the process, the parties should be testing out their thoughts with their primary care commissioner. This discussion will help establish what can and can't be done and the consultation needed. Getting too far down the road before this discussion takes place may result in delay and frustration. Primary Care Contracting nationally can also provide useful and objective advice and the BMA guidance document is essential reading.
