Letter of the week: I am resigning over these reckless reforms

By From a GP in Cornwall (name and address supplied) | 20 Feb 2012
I have resigned from general practice as a result of the interference by this Government in the running of the NHS and the care of patients – which for the first time since I had qualified in 1984...

It's sad that a hitherto committed NHS GP feels this way. Her/his departure will not help the local patients, though. Thanks a lot, Cameron!

I couldn't agree more with the sentiments of this brave GP. I too am battling my conscience every day. As an appraiser I know that many other GPs feel the same.

I am concerned that a well orchestrated 'hate campaign' against GPs over the last few years (fat cats earning quarter of a million) will leave the public with very little sympathy when we are thought to be the destroyers of the NHS. They'll be led to believe we are lining our own pockets with cost-cutting measures and privatisation. With salaried GPs earning £58,000 on average and GMS partners earning £100,400 on average at the moment (and this falling year on year) we are hardly the fat cats we are accused of being. Hospital consultants earn £74,504-£100,446. Add to that the pension debacle. I bet there are hundreds of GPs 55 years old and above who are planning to retire as we speak - and I don't blame them!
Bad times.
