Make use of GPs' business acumen

Primary care organisations need to harness GPs' 'entrepreneurialism' when implementing the GMS contract, according to NHS Confederation lead negotiator Mike

Farrar.

In a letter to PCOs he argued one of their main considerations has to be whether they are 'developing the entrepreneurial culture in primary care'.

Speaking to Pulse, Mr Farrar said this meant managers should get as much advice on budgets as possible from GPs. He added: 'I think it's important PCOs look at the vision and skills that the local GPs have and ensure they are working with them.'

Mr Farrar said it was 'not credible' for PCTs to attempt to implement the new contract without proper negotiation with GPs.

'If PCTs are being very managerial then they are not going about it the right way. GPs need to be involved.'
