Management consultants are worth the cash

It is wrong to assume money spent by the NHS on management consultants is wasted ('PCT spending on external consultants triples in just two years').

As the NHS Alliance points out, it is often far better value to buy in short-term external advice than to hire permanent staff.

Across the NHS, the specialist skills of management consultants are being used to improve efficiency, develop services and provide value for money to taxpayers. For example, in a recent industry award-winning project, Atos Consulting helped NHS South Central to reduce patient waiting times by an average of 14 weeks (and by up to 25 weeks in some cases).

We all appreciate the role that GPs play in the NHS. Frequently, it is management consultants who enable them to do their jobs effectively.
