Maternity benefits battle for PMS GPs

A campaign to ensure PMS GPs get equal maternity benefits is to be launched by the Medical Women's Federation.

The federation's new president Dr Melanie Jones, a consultant anaesthetist at Bromorgannwg Hospital, near Brid- gend in south Wales, has pledged to tackle the issue

following concerns raised among the federation's 2,000 members.

Dr Jones said there were big disparities in maternity pay and benefits among PMS members who negotiate contracts with local employers.

She said: 'This has led to certain individuals believing they are disadvantaged because they have not had benefits at the same level as their colleagues who have negotiated a better deal with their employers. We want women doctors to be treated equally.

We would like to put forward recommendations for best practice.'

A telephone poll of members will be conducted in a bid to establish minimum standards for maternity benefits.
