The most recent DH quarterly survey showed 55% of practices here rated PCT management support for PBC as poor.

Justin Chisnall, head of performance for NHS Medway, blames this on ‘very poor' ratings from three practices but insists concerns are being addressed. The PCT does have the highest proportion of GPs who feel PBC is improving patient care in the region, at 55%.

Some schemes are up and running.

Mr Chisnall says: ‘Recent success stories include dermatology provided in the community by a specialist nurse – a service that is now taking referrals – and an increase in the range of minor surgery procedures provided by GPs, which will start in 2009/10.'
