Men want same GP service as women

New equality laws should force GPs to provide the same standard of service to male and female patients, the Men's Health Forum has demanded.

The forum said GPs should be brought under the remit of the Equality Bill because general practice was 'demonstrably failing to meet men's needs effectively'.

Its submission to a Government consultation on the bill said the duty of GPs and the mechanisms for enforcing that duty were ambiguous under the current proposals and had to be made explicit.

A spokesman for the Men's Health Forum attacked the 'anomalous' situation where GPs, as members of practice management teams, could be making decisions about PCTs' obligations under the new laws on gender discrimination without having to meet its requirements.
