Tailor your own programme

As well as plenary sessions on mental health policy, dementia and the mental health of those with long-term physical illness, the event will feature a lively debate on what good, clinically-led commissioning of mental health services should look like. Delegates can also pick and mix sessions from three parallel conference streams. You can select a number of sessions and there is no need to stick to one stream throughout the conference. To ensure the agenda is as topical as possible, the programme is subject to change.

Stream A: Primary care - clinical updates and hot topics in mental health

A primary care stream aimed at GPs will cover topics including medically unexplained symptoms, successful management of anxiety and depression, and care of people with serious mental illness.

Nine out of ten people with mental health problems are managed solely in primary care, and stream A will focus on how GPs and other primary care professionals can achieve the best possible outcomes in this clinical area. It will cover:
  • identifying and diagnosing mental health problems in patients who may present with a range of physical and mental symptoms;
  • managing anxiety, depression and other common mental disorders in primary care;
  • making appropriate referrals to services that can help the more seriously ill; and
  • effective GP follow-up of patients with mental illness.
This stream will reflect the hot topics of current interest to GPs and provide an insight into future developments in mental health, as well as providing a networking forum where delegates can discuss mental health across primary and secondary care. Presentations will be tailored to the audience to ensure they reflect the realities of everyday GP practice and the way primary care professionals work together to meet the needs of their patients.

Stream B: Secondary care - Latest advances in key mental health conditions

A secondary care stream aimed at consultants will cover treatment-resistant schizophrenia and depression, substance misuse and ADHD in adults.

Psychiatrists face the ongoing challenge of trying to achieve better outcomes for patients with more severe mental disorders including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, treatment-resistant depression and dementia. Dementia is an area of increasing concern, with the number of people suffering from dementia set to increase by 62 per cent by 2026. Stream B of the conference aims to reflect novel approaches to treatment and to highlight cutting-edge developments which may benefit patients. It will cover effective pharmacological management of conditions such as anxiety and depression; novel therapeutic targets and new drugs for schizophrenia; managing patients with dementia effectively without overuse of antipsychotics; providing appropriate care for patients presenting with medically unexplained symptoms; and developing services for the unmet needs of specific groups of patients. The event will provide a forum for secondary and primary care clinicians to share ideas on improving services, as well as offering psychiatrists an insight into the future of pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment for mental illness.

Stream C: Commissioning Showcase - case studies of service redesign with proven success

A third stream on commissioning will highlight good practice examples such as anticipatory care for dementia, enhanced GP services for serious mental illness and integrated mental healthcare provision in acute hospitals.

Commissioners and providers of mental health services face the huge challenge of redesigning care pathways and systems to meet the demands of QIPP and the key objectives of the Mental Health Strategy. But how do fledgling clinical commissioning groups with so many competing priorities seek to change and influence mental health service delivery in their localities? Do GPs have the necessary skills and knowledge of the mental health system to influence and instigate change?

Stream C is designed for all those involved in the process of reconfiguring care pathways in mental health, from members of clinical commissioning groups and PCT clusters, community mental health teams, health and wellbeing board members, local authority leads and colleagues in housing and social care and members of the private and voluntary sector and user groups. We have scoured the UK for concrete examples of where mental health issues have been tackled head on, existing structures have been dismantled and new care pathways and systems introduced with tangible benefit. The case studies will cover:
  • Examples of acute services being shifted to the community resulting in fewer acute beds, increase service quality and efficiency
  • Systems redesigned to improve interface between primary and secondary care – reduction of inappropriate referral and better recovery
  • Successful roll-out of IAPT services
  • Innovations in the provision of mental health services by alternative providers
  • Examples of where the payment by results in mental health services has been piloted with proven success
  • Examples of areas that have successfully used the care packages and pathways clustering tool
