Met Office health forecast service facing closure

A unique service which uses weather forecasts to predict outbreaks of asthma, heart failure and COPD is under threat due to a lack of funding.

Treasury funding for the Met Office's Forecasting the Nation service, which is used by 45 GP co-ops and at least 30 hospitals to help manage demand, ran out in March.

The Met Office is now in talks with the Department of Health, but Dr William Bird, medical consultant to the Met Office and a former GP, said: 'If we don't get funding in the next two to three months the programme will have to end.'
