Ministers adrift on GP recruitment

The Government has recruited less than a quarter of the GPs it needs to fulfil its NHS Plan target of 2,000 extra GPs by 2004.

Health Minister John Hutton told shadow health spokesman Dr Liam Fox in the House of Commons last week that only 483 new GPs had been recruited up to the end of March 2002.
