Ministers to review 'top up' care policy

The Department of Health is to urgently review the policy of denying NHS services to patients who ‘top up' their care with private treatment.

Health Secretary Alan Johnson sanctioned the review following a public outcry after a series of high-profile cases of cancer patients being denied life-saving treatments.

It is expected to pave the way for a policy reversal to allow people suffering from cancer and other terminal illnesses to pay for life-saving drugs denied to them on the NHS while still receiving state-funded treatment.
