Monthly risedronate as good as daily

Risedronate taken once a month is as safe and effective as daily dosing, an international team of researchers report.

Their study randomised 1,292 women with postmenopausal osteoporosis to either 5mg daily risedronate or a 150mg dose once a month.

The mean reduction in the bone mineral density of lumbar spine bone was 3.4% in the daily dose group and 3.5% in those on the monthly dose. Overall rates of side effects were similar, although diarrhoea was more common with monthly dosing.
