GP leaders vote against limiting practice lists to 1,500 patients per GP

GP leaders have voted against limiting the number of patients a practice can have on their list to 1,500 per full-time equivalent GP.

The motion, debated at the English LMCs Conference in London today, had also called for a reduction in core hours to 8am to 6pm, but this was also voted down.

In an opinion piece for Pulse, Dr Mary McCarthy - from Shropshire LMC, who proposed the motion - said that such a recommendation would need to protect practice funding.

Motion in full

AGENDA COMMITTEE TO BE PROPOSED BY SHROPSHIRE: That conference, mindful of the clinical risks of excessive workload, believes that:

(i) an assessment of a GP’s commitment should be based on total hours worked rather than sessions - PASSED AS REFERENCE

(ii) the core contracted hours should be reduced to 08.00 hours – 18.00 hours - LOST

(iii) a limit of 1500 patients per WTE GP should be set as standard. - LOST

like Babylon the list size of healthy cherry picked patients can be as long as you like..
so long as they don't come in to be seen
so long as you get paid per patient on the list anyway

Most Gps know they have not been to see their own gp in years..

  • What Now?

    List size needs to be
per Number of "full time" partners
that way practices will be incentivised to improve working conditions to actually attract said partners

    Having said this
how will it work when practices are closing and further strain is put on practices when patients are simply transferred across

If there was a limit in place it would put an end to this transferring !!??
so the Gov should be against it
but Practices already struggling should be all for it
traditionally 2000 patient list per partner ??

  • I’m confused. Do you bring the NHS fairy on at the end of conference to wish for all this ?
Because it can’t just be all hot air that’s ignored can it?
