4. Dr Anu Rao

Dr Anu Rao says she is ‘getting younger by the day’ – quite a feat when you consider her enthusiasm for adding an ever-increasing number of responsibilities to her professional life.

In her role as vice-chair for Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland LMC – to which she was appointed in the past year – she supports colleagues who are brought before the GMC and represents their views and interests with NHS England, Health Education England East Midlands, and the BMA’s GP Committee.

Meanwhile, as clinical chair of the Charnwood GP federation, Dr Rao has led a collaboration of 22 practices with a contract worth £5m to transform primary care in the region.

She was also elected to the GPC at this year’s BMA’s Annual Representative meeting, which she describes as an ‘incredible honour’ and an exciting prospect in terms of influencing national policy.

Dr Rao is a GP trainer for the LMC and a GP partner at Forest House Surgery in the town of Shepshed. She says that grassroots GP work enables her to play a pivotal role in the future of general practice.
