Dr Paul Myres

Dr Myres is a tireless defender of general practice in Wales. As chair of RCGP Wales, he produced a manifesto for the Welsh Assembly elections on what was needed to save the profession. It was quoted in the Assembly and influenced the parties’ promises.

In his role as national lead for primary care development at Public Health Wales, he managed to persuade the Government to set up a primary care innovation and development hub, of which he is clinical lead. He says it aims ‘to support change in primary care and general practice, including responding to the crisis in workload and ensuring sustainability’.

Dr Myers stepped down as RCGP Wales chair last November but has been working with colleagues in primary and secondary care, public health and Government ‘to get recognition of primary care’s big impact on the public health with general practice at [its] core’.

This year he led a team of GPs to Lesotho in southern Africa to deliver mental health training. He is also lead for Choosing Wisely Wales and over the next year will launch it with the aim of reducing unnecessary treatments and increasing shared decision making.
